Our History
From a Small Workshop to a Leading Composite Manufacturer
Fibreglass Developments Ltd was established in 1978 in a workshop measuring just 1,600 square feet. Over the following decades, the company expanded considerably and now operates from a 44,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Feilding, New Zealand.
From its earliest years, FDL has specialised in developmental and custom manufacturing work. This has included refining existing products, developing entirely new concepts and producing components whose size, shape or performance requirements make composites particularly well suited to the application.
As the company grew, its capabilities expanded to cover the complete project process—from initial scoping and design through pattern and mould making, manufacture, finishing and installation. FDL has also developed a broad network of specialist suppliers and subcontractors, allowing each project to use the most appropriate combination of materials and processes rather than treating fibreglass as the automatic solution.
In January 2010, X-Form established its 5-axis CNC machining operation on the FDL site. This added the ability to produce highly accurate patterns and tooling, as well as undertake complex trimming and drilling work with greater consistency. The technology has supported tighter tolerances, improved repeatability and more efficient production of specialised components.
In April 2011, FDL was approved to use the New Zealand FernMark, which recognises New Zealand businesses and products operating in international markets.
FDL’s work has received recognition through several engineering, innovation and design awards. These include recognition for the Britomart train project, a Nuplex Innovation Award and a Silver Best Design Award for work completed on the Trans Scenic and TranzAlpine passenger trains.
Today, FDL continues to undertake projects across transport, aviation, marine, architecture, commercial manufacturing and specialist product development. Although the company’s facilities and technology have changed considerably since 1978, its focus remains the same: developing practical solutions and manufacturing products suited to each customer’s particular requirements.
