Feilding Clock Tower

In November 1999, FDL was approached to develop a practical alternative to replacing the copper dome atop the Feilding Clock Tower with another traditionally constructed copper dome.

The replacement was manufactured in fibreglass and finished with a specially formulated copper-filled gelcoat. This provided the appearance and character of copper while taking advantage of the lighter weight, mouldability and durability of composite construction.

The dome was manufactured in several sections before being prepared for installation. On 4 December 1999, the completed structure was lifted into position at the top of the Clock Tower.

This project demonstrates how fibreglass can reproduce the appearance of a traditional material while providing a practical solution for a large, elevated architectural feature.
