FDL has been involved with the rail industry for some 18 years and have supplied components for the complete refurbishment of the interior of several models of carriage, as well as new exterior nose cones. All have these have to meet exacting fire retardant specifications, as well as high quality satin finishes as all components are right in the public view.

Our scope of work has covered initial measure up of stripped carriages, assistance with design, and in particular the practicality and ease of installation facets of the design, manufacture, through to overseeing initial installations. In total, we have been involved in the refurbishment of over 150 carriages. All are still in service and looking very sharp.

We were very privileged to be involved in the creation of the new Trans-alpine and Trans-coastal trains built at Hillside. Unlike the previous carriages, which were refits of old carriages made in the 60's, bought from the UK, they were built entirely in NZ. An enormous jig was made to test the chassis' all built by the team at Hillside, which showed there was very capable enterprise down there and around the country. FDL produced numerous components for the fit out including; window surrounds, display consoles, toilet cubicles, exit doors and HVAC ducts to name a few. Some 14 carriages were built and are now successfully travelling up and down the country.
