fielding ag high school - sidecar Project
For three Year 13 students from Feilding High School, 2013 was a year of new challenges. Karel Beukes, Tanek Gardner and Toby White have stepped up to the mark and designed and developed sidecars based on Formula 2 side cars in a newly established class at the school. The sidecars have been made to take part in the annual mini-moto interschool competition.
FDL was approached by the students to help with making of the sidecars. The boys made moulds from polystyrene and carved out the shape they wanted with a barbecue cleaning tool. All work involved was undertaken by the students with advice and tips given by FDL staff. The three boys have learnt and done every aspect of the process themselves from design through to manufacture and the finished product speaks for itself - the sidecars look fantastic. The test will be getting them around the track.
"It was big eye-opener for us. We didn't know how hard it would be" Tanek
"We have learnt so much more, and it has been a good skill to have. If we didn't have their support and sponsorship our bikes wouldn't have been so good". Toby
"They came to see Steve Bond and he has been incredible to them. I can't sing his praises enough. This is a great example of how our local businesses can work alongside and support students achieving their goals. We can't thank them enough". Roger Emmerson - FAHS Engineering Teacher & NZ secondary Schools Mini Moto Competition President.
"It was easy to assist with this project. Here were some young guys actually keen to get down and do the graft themselves, rather than get Mum to organise it. It gave them the practical skills exposure, exposure to the intricacies and benefits of composites and since they are off to do engineering degrees, this information will no doubt sit in their memory for future use. They were enthusiastic, intelligent and it was a pleasure having them at FDL". Steve Bond - Owner FDL
We look forward to continuing the relationship in 2014 and beyond.
